The other day I told you how to add a TV tuner to your PC so you can record shows, TiVo-style. That’s easy enough, but what about copying those recordings to your iPod or iPhone?

After all, they’re free, unlike the ones you buy from iTunes for, on average, $1.99 a pop.

Sadly, Windows Media Center records in Microsoft’s proprietary DVR-MS format, which is incompatible with iPods, iPhones, and, for that matter, iTunes.

Enter iPodifier, a free utility that converts DVR-MS files to iPod-appropriate MPEG-4 or H264.

Just install the program, point it to Media Center’s Recorded TV folder (which is usually in the Public folder), and configure any options you want.

For example, iPodifier can convert all new shows or just those you choose, and it can automatically add transcoded shows to iTunes for on-demand syncing.

It’s an awesome little utility, but there’s one bit of bad news: It doesn’t support the new WTV format used by Windows 7. Thus, it’s only for users of Windows Vista and Windows XP Media Center Edition. Here’s hoping the developer updates it to work with WTV files!

IPod is an MP3 player that replaced portable CD and cassette players. There a few different types of iPod players, such as shuffle, nano, touch and classic. You can play music and video, and even view pictures with this MP3 player. You can also hook it up to an AUX jack in your car and enjoy quality sound on the go.

iTunes

# You can download songs to an iPod only by using iTunes, an Apple multimedia software used for movie and music playback, and also as an iPod applications manager. iTunes can either connect you to the iTunes store, where you can purchase the songs and then download them, or manage the transfer of audio files from your hard drive or any other secondary storage media to your iPod. You just need to copy a file or a folder to the iTunes library, which holds all of the files for your iPod.

Downloading iTunes

# iTunes is free and can be used with both PCs and Macs (it comes preinstalled with Mac’s operating software). Just go to Apple’s website and click on “Download Now” button. Start the installation of iTunes by double-clicking on the saved file once the download is finished. The installation wizard will guide you through the easy setup. Once this is done, go ahead and connect your iPod to the computer via the included USB cable.

Syncing your iPod

# Once you have the songs you want on your hard drive, or any other storage device, you need to transfer the files to your iPod. Go to the File menu –> Add Files to the Library (or Add Folder to the Library) –> browse to the songs your want to transfer and click “Open.” You will see the new songs added to the iTunes library right away. Now click on the name of your iPod in the left pane of the application and then click on “Sync” to synchronize the iPod with the library.

Websites With Free Music Downloads

# Now that you know how to transfer files to your iPod, you need to find websites that offer free music downloads. You can find plenty of websites like this on the Internet using a search engine. AlbumHunt, for example, offers full music albums downloads at absolutely no charge, you just need to go through a free registration. You can find plenty of music to any liking on Ez-Tracks as well. You do need an effective anti-spyware to prevent virus and spyware infections, since web downloads are often guilty of the crime.

Peer-to-Peer File Sharing Networks

# Another way to find free song downloads for your iPod is by using peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing networks. In a nutshell, software of this type allows users all over the world share music, movies and software with other people. Limewire, for example, has a free version of its P2P software, which is easy to download and install. You can find and download a song using the P2P network straight to your computer and then transfer it to your iPod using iTunes. However, keep in mind that P2P networks are one of the primary sources of spyware infections, so make sure that your anti-virus or anti-spyware is fully updated and turned on.
